. members of congress, even natural allies of president obama have been demanding coordination. tonight 6:00 p.m. this evening secretaries of state and defense and others will hold a conference call with president obama and other key committee heads to discuss the nation's posture on syria. what's interesting is that lawmakers are not here. they are still back in their states, in their districts on congressional recess. since they're all over the country, some will be on their cell phones. it is not going to be a secure line. meaning it can't be classified. it's going to be an unclassified conversation. one source who's going to be on the call who i talked to kind of rolled his eyes and said this means there's only so much they can really tell us about their plans. as you said, look, there's a big debate about whether the president needs congress's authorization legally. but politically, there's certainly a feeling among lawmakers in both parties that he's taking congress for granted. and it just would be in his best interest to get more members of congress on board. because they are incl

president obama trumpeted safeguards that he says helped minimize the risk to americans' privacy. >> checks are in place. and those abuses would be against the law and would be against the orders of the fiske. >> reporter: an internal nsa audit in other top secret files revealed there were more than 2,000 violations in the recent 12-month period, mostly unintentional. the nsa says when mistakes are made, the agency reports the issue internally and to federal overseers and aggressively gets to the bottom of it. but the new report raises concerns about that balance of power. the "washington post" reported the chair of the senate intelligence committee diane feinstein wasn't even aware of the audit until it was reported in the paper. feinstein disputes that, but in a statement admitted that the committee can and should do more to independently verify that nsa's operations are inappropriate and that its awareness of incidents are accurate. and the top judge on the secretive court that approves surveillance programs says judges aren't able to independently verify whether the government violates

leaker edward snowden himself. these new revelations today may contradict president obama's recent assurances, remember he talked last friday, about nsa surveillance programs. >> a general impression has, i think, taken hold not only among the american public but also around the world that somehow we're out there willy-nilly just sucking in information on everybody. and doing what we please with it. that's not the case. >> let me bring in three pinuated voices. ben ferguson and erol lewis. david soroda, i want to begin with you. my first question, when we look at edward snowden you hear it from different camps. you hear traitor. you hear patriot. here we are. we are still clearly talking about this and debating this. is what snowden did in the long run good for americans? suroda? >> absolutely. i think he's a hero. i think today's story is vindication of the fact he's a whistle blower. this story that was in the "washington post" today about the government breaking the law thousands of times a year in just one part of nsa, not the whole nsa, just one part, breaking the law thousand
